The posting

We are sharing a specialised remote consulting opportunity for current law students and recent JD graduates with strong expertise in Bluebook citation rules, legal research, law review editing, and source verification to contribute their editorial and analytical skills to advanced AI training and evaluation initiatives.

Selected professionals will review legal citation assessment frameworks, identify citation errors and ambiguous rules, and develop realistic cite-checking exercises based on established legal research and editorial practices. The work combines hands-on law journal experience with detailed source analysis, citation verification, structured evaluation design, and quality assessment to help improve the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of AI systems handling legal citations and research materials. Prior AI experience is not required.

Key Responsibilities

Bluebook Citation Review & Legal Accuracy

  • Review and evaluate legal citations for compliance with established Bluebook rules and citation conventions
  • Analyse citation formatting, source references, pincites, short forms, signals, and explanatory parentheticals
  • Identify technical citation errors, incomplete references, and inconsistencies within legal research materials
  • Assess whether cited authorities accurately support the legal propositions associated with them
  • Apply rigorous editorial judgement to ensure citation accuracy, consistency, and adherence to professional legal writing standards

Citation Rubric Development & Evaluation

  • Review existing Bluebook and pincite grading rubrics for clarity, completeness, and consistent application
  • Identify ambiguous assessment criteria that could produce inconsistent conclusions across different reviewers
  • Evaluate how citation rules are interpreted and applied across varying legal source types and citation contexts
  • Recommend improvements to rubric language, scoring considerations, and editorial guidance
  • Support the development of structured, repeatable evaluation methodologies for legal citation accuracy

Legal Cite-Checking Task Development

  • Create realistic cite-checking exercises using source materials paired with citations containing deliberate errors
  • Develop sample tasks reflecting common citation problems, including formatting mistakes, incorrect pincites, and source-support discrepancies
  • Prepare accurate model answers explaining the applicable Bluebook rules and appropriate corrections
  • Design exercises covering different citation categories, source types, and levels of editorial complexity
  • Translate practical law journal cite-checking experience into structured materials suitable for specialised AI evaluation

AI Training & Legal Citation Evaluation

  • Review and assess AI-generated legal citations, explanations, and citation-related analytical responses
  • Identify inaccuracies in citation formatting, source attribution, pinpoint references, and rule interpretation
  • Evaluate whether AI-generated citation explanations demonstrate accurate and consistent application of Bluebook conventions
  • Provide detailed written feedback identifying errors, explaining relevant rules, and clarifying appropriate corrections
  • Contribute specialised editorial expertise to improving AI performance across legal research and citation verification tasks

Editorial Quality Assurance & Research Collaboration

  • Apply consistent citation standards across substantial volumes of detailed legal research and editorial review work
  • Identify edge cases, unclear instructions, and unresolved citation questions requiring additional clarification
  • Communicate ambiguous or insufficiently defined scenarios to project coordinators for further review
  • Produce clear editorial notes, citation analyses, corrected examples, and structured evaluation feedback
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, attention to detail, consistency, and timely completion of assigned deliverables

Ideal Profile

  • Current law student, preferably in the second or third year of a JD programme (2L or 3L), or recent JD graduate
  • Hands-on experience with law review, law journal editing, or comparable academic legal publication activities
  • Strong working knowledge of The Bluebook and its application to legal research, citation formatting, and editorial review
  • Demonstrated experience conducting cite-checking, source collection, or legal citation verification
  • Familiarity with pinpoint citations, short-form citations, introductory signals, explanatory parentheticals, and complex citation structures
  • Ability to identify citation inaccuracies and clearly explain the legal citation rules supporting each correction
  • Experience comparing cited authorities with legal propositions to assess source accuracy and substantive support
  • Strong legal research, analytical reasoning, critical-thinking, and editorial problem-solving capabilities
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy across repetitive, technically demanding review assignments
  • Strong written communication skills, particularly in explaining detailed editorial decisions and citation corrections
  • Ability to identify ambiguous citation rules, unusual source references, and inconsistencies within structured review criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage assigned tasks, and meet established deadlines
  • Strong organisational skills and commitment to clear, consistent, and accurate legal research documentation
  • Experience as a law journal editor, articles editor, executive editor, or dedicated cite-checking editor is advantageous
  • Familiarity with developing editorial guidelines, assessment rubrics, or structured citation review processes is beneficial
  • Interest in legal technology, AI-assisted legal research, or emerging applications of automated citation verification
  • Prior experience with AI training, model evaluation, or legal technology projects is not required

Engagement Details

  • Freelance / contract engagement

  • Compensation: $50–$80/hour

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
