Job description

Role Introduction We’re looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our Electrical Engineering team at Creature Technology. You’ll design the electrical systems that power and control our large-scale animatronic creatures, working across the full project lifecycle from initial design through to testing, commissioning, and installation.

While we’re recruiting at Electrical Engineer level, we also welcome applications from experienced Senior Electrical Engineers who can bring additional technical leadership, design authority, and project guidance.

A Little About the Role / Why This Role Matters Our creatures rely on complex electrical systems to move, perform, and operate safely in front of live audiences. You’ll design bespoke controls and power distribution systems for machinery, then stay involved as those designs become equipment cabinets, wired assemblies, tested systems, and working animatronic builds. You’ll work closely with electrical fabrication, controls, mechanical engineering, production, and project teams to solve practical integration challenges and deliver reliable systems. You could be the one if you…

  • Hold a tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Have at least five years’ electrical engineering experience producing controls and power distribution systems for machinery.
  • Have delivered electrical designs from concept through to completion.
  • Have experience designing machine wiring and developing wiring schematics.
  • Have worked with industrial motion equipment and low-voltage systems below 1kV.
  • Can use an electrical CAE platform (EPLAN Electric P8 or a comparable) to produce designs, schematics, documentation, and project deliverables.
  • Have supported fabrication, testing, installation, and commissioning activities as part of an engineering project.
  • Can translate technical and project requirements into practical electrical engineering outputs.
  • Are registered as a Professional Engineer in Victoria in Electrical Engineering, or can achieve registration within an agreed timeframe.
  • Hold a valid passport that allows you to travel out of and return to Australia.
  • Communicate clearly and enjoy working across engineering, fabrication, production, and project teams.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with EPLAN Electric P8.
  • Experience with factory machinery, assembly robots, complex animatronics, or comparable automation systems.
  • Knowledge of safe-system design and machinery hazard analysis.
  • Machine Functional Safety certification or applied functional safety experience.
  • Experience designing to international standards such as UL 508A, IEC, or GB standards.
  • Experience using SolidWorks 3D or a comparable platform to review equipment layouts and mechanical interfaces.
  • Knowledge of PLC control systems.
  • Knowledge of battery-powered mobile equipment or portable power systems.
  • Experience or qualifications in electrical installation.

Applying at Senior Level We may appoint an experienced candidate at Senior Electrical Engineer level. To be considered at this level, you’ll also need:

  • At least 10 years’ electrical engineering experience producing controls and power distribution systems for machinery.
  • Experience leading electrical engineering work across the full project lifecycle with minimal oversight.
  • Experience guiding, supervising, and reviewing engineers within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Advanced electrical CAE design capability.
  • Experience reviewing electrical engineering work and providing technical sign-off or formal design approval.
  • Experience planning and delivering work within agreed budget, timeline, quality, and safety requirements.

What You’ll Do

  • Design controls and power distribution systems for large-scale animatronic creatures and bespoke machinery.
  • Develop electrical schematics, cabinet layouts, single-line diagrams, multi-line drawings, and project documentation using an electrical CAE platform.
  • Select and evaluate electrical components across design, purchasing, fabrication, testing, and installation stages.
  • Complete low-voltage and extra-low-voltage power distribution calculations, including cable sizing, cabinet heat dissipation, and power requirements for DC servo systems.
  • Prepare I/O lists and configure terminals with consideration for electrical loads and system requirements.
  • Support the design and supervise the manufacture of equipment cabinets, electrical assemblies, prototypes, and first-article builds.
  • Work closely with electrical fabrication and other technical teams during wiring, functional testing, fault-finding, commissioning, and installation.
  • Maintain bills of materials, technical records, drawings, specifications, and other project deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Apply machinery-safety requirements and hazard-analysis principles to electrical design decisions.
  • Coordinate electrical engineering tasks with project managers, engineers, production teams, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Review designs and documentation carefully, incorporating technical feedback before formal approval.
  • Identify electrical design or integration issues early and help develop practical solutions with the wider project team.

Working Arrangements This is a full-time, permanent role based primarily onsite at our Port Melbourne office and workshop. Some flexibility may be available where appropriate. Creature Technology works primarily on international projects. Occasional overseas travel may be required, typically during installation and commissioning phases.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
