Job Title - Design Engineer

IMI plc

We are a global specialist engineering company that creates breakthrough solutions. We are curious and like to solve problems, partnering with our customers to solve the demands of today and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. We embrace innovation and care about outcomes that are good for business, everyday life and making a better world – creating lasting impact for everyone.

We design, build and service highly engineered products in fluid and motion control applications. We focus on five market sectors: Industrial Automation, Process Automation, Climate Control, Life Science and Fluid Control, and Transport.

Climate Control offers hydraulic solutions for water-based heating and cooling systems to achieve a perfect indoor climate with minimal energy consumption. Our leading brands have been used in over 100,000 building projects worldwide and offer products and solutions in three key areas: Pressure maintenance and water quality, regulation, control and actuators, and thermostatic control.

Role Overview

The Design Engineer will support IMI Climate Control’s Americas business by developing, adapting, and sustaining engineered product solutions that meet regional customer, application, regulatory, and manufacturing needs. This role applies established engineering principles with increasing independence, partners closely with global engineering teams, and helps translate global platforms into practical solutions for the Americas market. The role offers the opportunity to contribute to new product development, product localization, design improvements, technical problem solving, and cross-functional project execution with colleagues across engineering, product management, operations, quality, and commercial teams.

Work Environment: On-site

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain product designs, drawings, models, specifications, and engineering documentation in alignment with IMI standards, customer requirements, and applicable regional codes or market expectations.
  • Partner with global engineering teams to adapt global product platforms, design practices, and technical standards for Americas-specific applications, installations, and customer requirements.
  • Support engineering projects from concept through release by completing design calculations, design reviews, prototype support, validation activities, and change documentation.
  • Collaborate with product management, operations, quality, supply chain, and commercial teams to resolve technical issues, improve manufacturability, and support delivery of customer-focused solutions.
  • Analyze product performance, field feedback, manufacturing data, and customer input to identify design improvements, cost reduction opportunities, and product reliability enhancements.
  • Prepare clear technical communication, design summaries, engineering change requests, and project updates for cross-functional stakeholders in the Americas and global engineering network.
  • Follow IMI engineering, quality, safety, and compliance processes while contributing to a culture of continuous improvement, technical discipline, and responsible business conduct.

Critical Competencies for Success

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline; equivalent applied engineering experience may be considered where appropriate.
  • Applied design engineering experience with the ability to complete moderately complex assignments, make sound technical recommendations, and know when to escalate risks or decisions.
  • Strong working knowledge of engineering drawings, 3D modeling, product documentation, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and engineering change control.
  • Experience designing products for HVAC systems, including an understanding of how products are applied in heating, cooling, and hydronic control systems. Familiarity with relevant industry requirements and legislation, such as pressure equipment guidelines, product safety expectations, material compliance, and regional certification needs, is important to ensure robust and compliant product solutions.
  • Ability to take initiative and work with a high degree of self-leadership in a small local R&D group, including identifying priorities, driving tasks forward independently, and seeking input or alignment when needed.
  • Ability to collaborate across regions, time zones, and functions, including working effectively with global engineering teams to align technical solutions to Americas market needs.
  • Clear problem-solving approach, with the ability to evaluate technical data, identify root causes, compare options, and communicate practical recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Customer and business orientation, with an understanding of how design decisions affect product performance, manufacturability, quality, cost, delivery, and regional competitiveness.
  • Ability to travel on a limited basis to support engineering reviews, supplier or manufacturing collaboration, customer applications, testing, or project implementation as business needs require.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
