Job Description

Indian River State College is seeking a talented and student-focused Adjunct Instructor of Music to inspire and engage students through high-quality instruction in the performing arts. In this role, you will teach assigned music appreciation courses, evaluate student learning, provide timely feedback, and foster a supportive learning environment that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and artistic growth. The ideal candidate is passionate about music education, committed to academic excellence, and dedicated to helping students achieve their educational and career goals. This position offers an opportunity to share your expertise while making a lasting impact on students and the broader college community.

**This position is open only to candidates who reside in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. ** Due to business and employment compliance requirements, we are unable to consider applicants who reside outside these states.

This posting is part of an ongoing adjunct faculty recruitment effort.

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Preparing, instructing, and grading all class coursework;
  • Assigning final grades;
  • Communicating with students in a timely manner

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructing assigned classes;
  • Grading all quizzes, tests, and written assignments;
  • Assigning final grades and delivering grades and grade justification sheets;
  • Maintaining a safe and effective classroom environment;
  • Responding to student inquiries regarding course content, grading, and other academic concerns;
  • Collaborating with department colleagues as necessary;

Completing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in Music, or a Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate hours in Music;
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written;
  • Proven teaching skills with the ability to convey basic concepts and theories in a practical and comprehensible way;
  • Ability to recognize and to respond to students from culturally diverse backgrounds as well as the willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • Understanding of online pedagogy;
  • All instructors must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Preferred:

  • A Master of Fine Arts degree or Doctorate from a regionally accredited institution in Music;
  • Two (2) to five (5) years teaching experience in a post-secondary institution.
  • Experience teaching online courses (Asynchronous)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position requires an ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. Some lifting of computer and electronic equipment may be required. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
