The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Automation Engineer – EPMS Design based in the United States.

The Automation Engineer – EPMS Design will design, develop, and implement automation and monitoring systems for large-scale, mission-critical data center projects. The role covers Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), Building Management Systems (BMS), and SCADA platforms throughout the full project lifecycle, from engineering design and documentation to system development, testing, and commissioning. You will combine hands-on technical development with detailed engineering drawing production, ensuring that design packages remain accurate and consistent as projects evolve. Working with a nationwide engineering team, you will collaborate with project managers, design leads, field technicians, customers, consultants, contractors, and equipment manufacturers. This position offers the opportunity to deepen your expertise in AutoCAD, PLC programming, SCADA development, and industrial communications while contributing to critical infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will take ownership of assigned project scopes, solve technical challenges independently, and help guide junior team members. Professional development and a potential progression toward technical leadership are important parts of this opportunity.

Accountabilities:

  • Engineering Design and Documentation Create, revise, and maintain engineering drawings using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical, including control panel layouts, wiring and termination diagrams, network riser diagrams, P&IDs, enclosure details, and installation drawings. Keep design packages up to date throughout the project lifecycle by incorporating RFI responses, design changes, field redlines, and as-built conditions. Apply and improve CAD standards, including title blocks, layers, symbol libraries, drawing numbering, and revision control. Coordinate drawings with device lists, point lists, and bills of materials to ensure consistent documentation. Interpret customer specifications, electrical one-line diagrams, mechanical drawings, and owner standards to establish system requirements and automation scope. Develop control system architectures and sequences of operation for EPMS, BMS, and SCADA applications, including electrical distribution and mechanical cooling monitoring. Select and specify PLCs, controllers, power meters, gateways, sensors, transmitters, network switches, and related hardware. Prepare clear engineering submittals for customers, consultants, subcontractors, and field installation teams. Coordinate with equipment manufacturers on communication maps, register lists, connectivity requirements, and hardware compatibility. Manage drawings, RFIs, and submittals through Autodesk Build and contribute to project startup standards. Automation Development and Systems Integration Configure and develop SCADA/HMI applications in Ignition, including tag structures, user-defined types (UDTs), graphics, alarms, historian functions, trending, and reporting. Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC logic using Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 or comparable platforms to support data acquisition and automation sequences. Integrate field devices and third-party equipment using industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, BACnet, SNMP, and EtherNet/IP. Apply operational technology (OT) networking and cybersecurity best practices, including network segmentation, VLANs, and redundancy. Testing and Commissioning Develop test procedures and checklists for factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), point-to-point verification, and Level 4/5 integrated systems testing. Support installation, startup, commissioning, and cutover activities remotely and on site. Track commissioning progress, device verification, and outstanding issues using tools such as CxAlloy and Basecamp. Contribute to Method of Procedure (MOP) documentation for work performed in live, mission-critical environments. Deliver accurate as-built drawings, project closeout documentation, and operation and maintenance (O&M) materials. Collaboration, Project Ownership, and Leadership Support solutions architects and sales teams with conceptual designs, scope reviews, and project estimating. Communicate project progress, schedule risks, and design changes promptly to design leads and project managers, proposing practical solutions. Mentor junior designers and field technicians and delegate tasks when appropriate. Manage assigned project scopes within allocated budgets and agreed delivery schedules. Collaborate effectively with geographically distributed engineering, project, and field teams. Follow applicable health, safety, and electrical safety procedures, including NFPA 70E requirements. Requirements: Professional Experience and Technical Skills 3–5 years of experience in automation, controls, SCADA, or systems integration engineering. At least 2 years of hands-on AutoCAD experience, including the ability to independently create and revise control, wiring, and layout drawings. Working knowledge of drafting principles, engineering drawing standards, and revision control. Practical experience integrating systems using Ignition or a comparable SCADA/HMI platform. Experience reading, modifying, and troubleshooting PLC programs; Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 experience is preferred. Ability to interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and technical specifications. Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols, including Modbus, BACnet, SNMP, and EtherNet/IP. Experience supporting the full project lifecycle, including design, development, testing, and commissioning. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with collaborative tools such as Microsoft Teams. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work directly with clients and technical stakeholders. Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, solve problems proactively, and meet deadlines. Ability to collaborate effectively with remote and multi-location teams. Willingness to travel approximately 25–50%, with more extensive travel during commissioning periods. Preferred Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Computer, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, including symbol libraries, wire numbering, and automated reporting. Experience developing or maintaining CAD standards. Ignition Core Certification; Gold Certification is an advantage. Experience with data centers, mission-critical facilities, pharmaceutical environments, or other regulated industries. Experience designing or integrating EPMS or BMS solutions. Familiarity with distributed control systems (DCS), such as DeltaV, or other process control platforms. Experience with Revit or other building information modeling (BIM) tools. Scripting experience with Python/Jython or SQL for SCADA applications. Familiarity with power meters and electrical distribution equipment, including switchgear, UPS systems, PDUs, and generators. Experience using Autodesk Build, CxAlloy, or comparable project management and commissioning tools. Experience supporting proposals, estimating, or solutions development. Work Authorization and Pre-Employment Conditions Must be authorized to work in the United States. Employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of applicable pre-employment screenings, which may include background checks and drug screening in accordance with applicable laws. Roles in which driving is an essential function require a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR). Benefits: Annual salary: $100,000–$125,000, depending on experience. Medical insurance. Dental and vision insurance. Basic life insurance and voluntary life insurance. Short-term and long-term disability coverage. Paid vacation. Paid sick leave. Paid holidays. 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching. Professional development support, including opportunities to pursue Ignition Core and Gold certifications. Hands-on development across engineering design, PLC programming, SCADA development, and commissioning. Opportunities to contribute to large-scale, mission-critical data center projects. A collaborative engineering environment with a potential career path toward Design Lead responsibilities.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
