This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Counsel, Labor Employment and Benefits based in United States.
This role serves as a strategic legal advisor on enterprise-wide labor, employment, and benefits matters across a global organization. You will provide practical, risk-based counsel throughout the full employment lifecycle, from recruitment and performance management through termination and organizational change. The position partners closely with senior business leaders, Human Resources, Total Rewards, Benefits, Compliance, and other legal stakeholders to address complex employment matters. You will advise on benefits, leaves, accommodations, disputes, investigations, collective bargaining, employment agreements, severance, and evolving labor and employment regulations. The role combines subject-matter expertise with strong business judgment, requiring the ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives. You will also contribute to policies, training, strategic initiatives, and cross-functional projects while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. This is a fully remote opportunity with global scope and regular collaboration across regions and functions.
Accountabilities
- Provide day-to-day legal counsel on labor and employment matters throughout the employment lifecycle, including recruitment, performance management, employee relations, and termination.
- Advise business leaders and Human Resources teams on employment law issues across functions and jurisdictions.
- Provide legal support to Total Rewards teams and benefits governance groups on global benefits matters, including health and welfare programs, retirement plans, perquisites, and severance.
- Advise on employee leave, accommodation, and related workplace matters.
- Develop strategies for employment disputes and negotiate appropriate resolutions.
- Assess legal risks associated with discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage and hour matters, and other employment law claims.
- Support contested employment matters, including regulatory proceedings and litigation involving employment-related claims.
- Develop and update employment policies, procedures, and training programs to address legal requirements and business needs.
- Assist with grievance administration and collective bargaining agreement matters.
- Monitor developments in global labor, employment, and benefits legislation and advise business stakeholders on their potential impact.
- Counsel leaders on voluntary and involuntary terminations, reorganizations, and related legal exposure while remaining aligned with business objectives.
- Maintain global employment agreement templates, severance policies, and related legal resources.
- Support Human Resources and Compliance investigations when legal guidance is required.
- Collaborate with other members of the Legal Department on cross-functional initiatives and strategic business projects.
- Manage multiple competing priorities, assess legal risk and business value, and deliver timely, practical recommendations.
- Build strong relationships with clients and stakeholders by providing clear, balanced, and business-oriented legal advice.
- Work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders across different regions and time zones in a global virtual environment.
- Take initiative in identifying emerging legal issues, understanding business operations, and proactively addressing potential risks.
- Hold a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited institution.
- Be an active member in good standing of at least one state bar.
- Bring 4–6 years of relevant legal experience gained at a large law firm, as in-house counsel, or in a comparable employment law environment.
- Demonstrate substantial experience advising proactively on labor, employment, and benefits matters.
- Have experience handling contested employment law matters, including EEOC proceedings and litigation involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, or related claims.
- Demonstrate experience advising senior business leaders on employment law matters and the implications of legal issues for strategic business objectives.
- Possess excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to tailor complex legal advice to different audiences.
- Demonstrate strong legal judgment, organizational judgment, and the ability to develop practical solutions to complex issues.
- Be able to identify critical legal risks quickly while understanding both immediate and longer-term business implications.
- Demonstrate the ability to balance appropriate legal risk mitigation with commercial and operational objectives.
- Be comfortable managing multiple priorities, tight deadlines, and complex matters simultaneously.
- Possess a strong customer-service mindset and a practical, business-oriented approach to legal counseling.
- Be capable of working independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrate strategic thinking, problem-solving ability, initiative, and curiosity about both legal and business issues.
- Have a global mindset and the ability to collaborate virtually with colleagues and stakeholders across different regions.
- Prior in-house legal experience is preferred.
- Experience advising on global employment law matters is preferred.
- Experience managing outside counsel and establishing or monitoring legal budgets is preferred.
- Annual salary range of $135,000–$175,000 USD.
