The posting
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Finance (Insurance) based in the United States.
This is a hands-on finance leadership opportunity within a growing program insurance business. You will own how financial results are interpreted, controlled, reported, and communicated across the organization. Working closely with the CFO and Controller, you will help build the finance function, rather than simply maintain an established operation. Your scope will span financial reporting, technical accounting, FP&A, controls, audit, tax, treasury, and interim HR responsibilities. You will play a critical role in navigating complex insurance accounting topics, including reinsurance, commissions, premiums, collateral, and restricted cash. The role offers significant autonomy, with the expectation that you will personally build key processes during the first year and grow the team as the business scales. It is an ideal opportunity for an experienced insurance finance leader who enjoys building structure, exercising judgment, and turning complex financial information into clear business insight.
Accountabilities
- Own internal and external financial reporting, including monthly reporting packages, KPI reporting, board and investor materials, annual US GAAP financial statements and footnotes, and reporting required by lenders, reinsurers, and carrier partners.
- Own the close framework, including the close calendar, quality standards, consolidation process, review, sign-off, and reporting of financial results.
- Design, document, and maintain finance processes and the control framework, including segregation of duties, authorization limits, reconciliations, and other appropriate financial controls.
- Lead technical accounting research and prepare accounting position memos, particularly around commission revenue, contingent and variable consideration, ceded reinsurance, premium receivables and payables, gross versus net presentation, collateral, and restricted cash.
- Maintain the accounting policy manual and provide accounting guidance on new insurance programs and contracts before they are finalized.
- Manage external audit and tax relationships, including audit schedules, PBC requirements, tax filings, tax provisions, state registrations, and other applicable indirect tax obligations.
- Own FP&A activities, including the operating model, annual budget, rolling forecasts, monthly variance analysis, cash forecasting, and runway planning.
- Monitor working-capital requirements associated with insurance settlement cycles and collateral obligations.
- Oversee treasury activities, including banking relationships, borrowing arrangements, and investment of surplus cash.
- Support the organization’s HR function on an interim basis, overseeing employee lifecycle processes, benefits and renewals, policies, and the employee handbook until dedicated HR resources are established.
- Build and develop the finance organization over time, hiring additional team members as business complexity and workload increase.
- Partner closely with the CFO and Controller, including reviewing each other’s work and maintaining a high standard of financial accuracy and accountability.
- CPA certification is required.
- 8+ years of accounting and finance experience, including public accounting experience; audit experience within an insurance practice is particularly valuable.
- Strong insurance accounting experience within an MGA, program administrator, fronting carrier, carrier, or comparable environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ceded reinsurance, commission structures including contingent arrangements, premium receivables and payables, and collateral accounting.
- Proven ownership of a complete financial close process rather than participation in individual close activities.
- Demonstrated technical accounting experience, including researching accounting standards, preparing technical memos, and defending accounting positions with auditors.
- Strong budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling capabilities using business and operational drivers, with advanced Excel skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to explain complex financial matters and accounting judgments clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical discipline, and a commitment to investigating discrepancies rather than using unsupported adjustments.
- Willingness to challenge assumptions and communicate difficult financial findings transparently, including acknowledging and correcting mistakes.
- Experience with statutory accounting or insurance regulatory reporting is preferred.
- Experience helping select or implement an ERP or accounting system is advantageous.
- Experience managing outsourced accounting providers and holding external partners accountable to defined standards is a plus.
- Previous experience establishing a first close calendar, leading a first audit, or building an initial finance team is highly desirable.
- Comfortable working independently in a build-oriented environment where processes, controls, and organizational structures are still evolving.
- Remote-friendly position available to candidates located in the United States.
- Significant ownership and autonomy in building the finance function of a growing insurance business.
- Direct partnership with the CFO and Controller and visibility into key financial and strategic decisions.
- Opportunity to shape financial reporting, controls, accounting policies, FP&A, treasury, and finance infrastructure from the ground up.
- Opportunity to build and develop a finance team as the business grows.
- Exposure to complex insurance accounting, reinsurance, program structures, and financial operations.
- Equal employment opportunity for all qualified applicants.
- Reasonable accommodations available for applicants and employees with disabilities.
