The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Operations based in United States.

This senior leadership role will oversee and scale operations across a fully remote, mission-driven organization. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Operations will help strengthen organizational performance, financial health, and operational infrastructure. The position combines strategic leadership with hands-on responsibility across finance, human resources, compliance, risk management, and administration. You will build effective systems, guide a high-performing team, and provide leadership with clear financial and operational insights. Success requires strong analytical judgment, fiscal discipline, and the ability to create alignment across functions. The role offers significant autonomy in a flexible environment where operational excellence directly supports a broader public-service mission.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead and continuously improve hiring, compensation, benefits, payroll, performance management, training, and broader talent-management processes.
  • Own compensation philosophy and structure while supporting salary negotiations, employee development, and organizational performance initiatives.
  • Oversee contractor acquisition, records, reporting, and key contractor metrics.
  • Develop financial dashboards, monthly reporting, financial models, and actionable insights to support strategic decision-making.
  • Lead annual budgeting, rolling cash-flow forecasts, scenario modeling, reserve planning, and evaluation of strategic investments and expansion initiatives.
  • Oversee accounting, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, cash management, and financial compliance.
  • Monitor organizational financial health and proactively identify risks, opportunities, and areas requiring leadership attention.
  • Maintain state and federal compliance requirements, including employment regulations, workers' compensation, required registrations, insurance, FMLA, ADA, and related processes.
  • Coordinate legal claims, employment matters, contract reviews, outside counsel relationships, and organizational insurance coverage.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop Operations team members while establishing departmental goals, meetings, and performance priorities.
  • Maintain organizational systems, tools, user access, and permissions across core platforms.
  • Support the planning and execution of Board meetings and in-person team gatherings.
  • Partner with senior leadership and managers across the organization to strengthen operational processes, build alignment, and support long-term organizational growth.
  • 5+ years of experience in operations, finance, human resources, or a related field, ideally within a nonprofit, mission-driven, or fast-growing organization.
  • Strong expertise in financial management, budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow analysis, and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience with human resources, talent management, compensation, benefits, and organizational development.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit compliance, employment law, regulatory requirements, insurance, and organizational risk management.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to translate complex information into practical recommendations and decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and build alignment across teams.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams in a fully remote environment.
  • Ability to work effectively through ambiguity, organizational change, and competing priorities while maintaining a proactive, solutions-oriented approach.
  • Experience using Google Workspace, Slack, and project management platforms such as Asana.
  • Interest in or experience with AI-powered tools is a plus.
  • Strong commitment to working within a mission-driven environment and contributing to organizational values and objectives.
  • Ability to work remotely with a reliable computer and internet connection and collaborate effectively across a distributed organization.
  • Starting salary of $120,000–$135,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Annual benefits stipend of $8,000, paid incrementally with each paycheck once benefits eligible.
  • Stipend can be used toward health, vision, dental insurance, retirement accounts, and other eligible benefits.
  • Flexible remote work environment with flexibility in scheduling.
  • Unlimited vacation.
  • Fully remote position with no required office location.
  • Opportunity to lead critical operations spanning finance, HR, compliance, risk, and organizational administration.
  • Significant influence over operational strategy, financial governance, and organizational development.
  • Collaborative environment with modern tools including Google Workspace, Slack, and Asana.
  • Opportunity to support a mission-driven organization serving a broad public audience.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
