The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Tolling Senior MS SQL DBA based in the United States.

This is an excellent opportunity for a database administration professional to support mission-critical tolling technology within a state government transportation environment. In this role, you will manage, optimize, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server and cloud database environments to ensure reliability, availability, and performance. You will work with complex databases, high-availability configurations, and cloud technologies while helping resolve application and connectivity issues. The position combines hands-on database administration, performance tuning, system upgrades, and technical troubleshooting with collaboration across engineering and operations teams. You will also contribute to improving existing database processes and implementing solutions that support evolving operational needs. This is a remote contract opportunity initially expected to last 10 months, ideal for a technically skilled professional who values system stability, continuous improvement, and public-sector impact.

Accountabilities

  • Administer, monitor, and support Microsoft SQL Server databases and cloud database environments to maintain high availability, reliability, security, and performance.
  • Configure, manage, and troubleshoot SQL Server clustering, database mirroring, failover clustering, and other high-availability solutions.
  • Install, upgrade, patch, migrate, and maintain SQL Server databases, including SQL Server 2022 and newer versions, as required.
  • Analyze database performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize long-running SQL queries and database workloads.
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and maintain Transact-SQL scripts to support database operations, automation, and application requirements.
  • Diagnose and resolve application and database issues involving connectivity, access permissions, security, and system performance.
  • Support cloud database administration using Microsoft Azure and, where applicable, Snowflake or Databricks.
  • Use operating system scripting utilities and related tools to automate database maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Review existing database implementations, tasks, and operational processes, recommending and implementing improvements aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Apply data modeling principles and support database design, maintenance, and optimization initiatives.
  • Work with engineering and operations professionals to resolve technical issues, maintain service continuity, and support tolling applications.
  • Participate in a rotating schedule of help desk and application support responsibilities as part of the broader technical team.
  • Document technical requirements, design decisions, database changes, and operational procedures using established standards and artifacts.
  • Maintain current technical knowledge through ongoing professional development and training.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with Microsoft SQL Server database administration, including database support, maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
  • Demonstrated experience with SQL Server performance tuning, including query optimization and troubleshooting long-running SQL operations.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL Server high-availability technologies, including clustering, mirroring, and failover configurations.
  • Experience installing, upgrading, patching, and migrating SQL Server databases.
  • Proficiency in writing, debugging, and maintaining Transact-SQL (T-SQL) scripts.
  • At least 1 year of experience with Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks, or a relevant certification accepted in place of practical experience.
  • Familiarity with SQL Server 2019 or later and an understanding of database administration in enterprise environments.
  • Exposure to SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS); experience with these technologies is beneficial.
  • Experience working with Windows operating systems and using scripting utilities for database administration and diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of data modeling principles, database architecture, access management, and security best practices.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent skills, knowledge, education, and professional experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information clearly through written documentation, requirements, design artifacts, and verbal discussions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, sound technical judgment, and the ability to independently manage complex assignments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering and operations teams while prioritizing database reliability and service quality.
  • Willingness to complete a fingerprint-based background check and pursue ongoing technical education at personal expense to remain current with relevant technologies.
  • Contract duration: Initial 10-month full-time contract.
  • Remote work: Remote working arrangement within the United States.
  • Technical challenges: Hands-on experience supporting enterprise SQL Server environments, high-availability infrastructure, and cloud database technologies.
  • Public-sector impact: Opportunity to contribute to the reliability and performance of technology supporting transportation and tolling operations.
  • Professional development: Exposure to modern SQL Server versions, cloud platforms, database optimization, and enterprise systems support.
  • Collaborative environment: Work alongside engineering and operations professionals on critical database and application support initiatives.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
