The posting

Overview

Microsoft’s continued investment in AI and high-performance computing is driving new requirements for datacenter electrical infrastructure, particularly in how power systems are monitored, integrated, and controlled. AI workloads introduce unique and rapidly evolving power characteristics that require new approaches to electrical telemetry and controls.

The Senior Controls Systems Design Engineer will help develop and deliver power monitoring, telemetry, and controls solutions that support Microsoft’s next generation of AI datacenters. This role provides an opportunity to work at the intersection of AI infrastructure, electrical power systems, industrial controls, and data acquisition, translating emerging requirements into reliable and scalable engineering solutions.

The engineer will work with multidisciplinary teams to evaluate new requirements, develop technical solutions, validate new technologies, support deployment, and help transition emerging capabilities into standardized solutions that can be used across Microsoft’s global datacenter portfolio.

In addition to the AI infrastructure focus, the role will apply strong Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS) and industrial controls expertise to the design, integration, testing, and commissioning of datacenter monitoring and controls systems.

Responsibilities

AI Infrastructure and Power Telemetry

  • Develop power monitoring, telemetry, and controls solutions supporting AI and high-density datacenter infrastructure.
  • Translate emerging AI infrastructure requirements into electrical monitoring and controls solutions.
  • Develop and evaluate advanced power telemetry capabilities used to understand the electrical characteristics and behavior of AI workloads.
  • Support the development of monitoring and controls solutions addressing emerging power quality and electrical system challenges associated with AI infrastructure.
  • Define technical requirements for instrumentation, metering, communications, data acquisition, time synchronization, alarming, and system availability.
  • Evaluate new technologies and work with internal engineering teams and industry partners to develop solutions for emerging datacenter requirements.
  • Plan and support engineering validation, lab testing, functional testing, and field deployment of new monitoring and controls technologies.
  • Analyze system performance and troubleshoot complex electrical monitoring, controls, communications, and integration issues.
  • Support the transition of emerging technologies from engineering development into scalable and repeatable datacenter solutions.
  • Develop technical documentation and guidance to support deployment, commissioning, operation, and troubleshooting of new solutions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, networking, software, commissioning, operations, equipment manufacturer, and industry partner teams.

EPMS and Controls Engineering

  • Design and configure EPMS hardware, communications, networks, databases, graphics, alarming, and notifications.
  • Develop and test integrations for electrical power monitoring equipment and systems.
  • Develop technical submittal packages including network drawings, device lists, communication settings, and equipment requirements.
  • Develop and review TCP/IP and serial communication network designs.
  • Coordinate EPMS designs across engineering, software, networking, commissioning, A/E firms, equipment vendors, general contractors, and commissioning agents.
  • Ensure EPMS and controls designs meet project specifications and engineering standards.
  • Troubleshoot complex EPMS, controls, device, and communications issues.
  • Contribute to standardized and scalable EPMS and power monitoring solutions.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
