Job Description
As the xPON OLT Embedded Software Team Lead, you will build, manage, and develop a high-performing engineering team in Malaysia, ensuring the on-time, high-quality delivery of OLT software releases in alignment with global R&D objectives. You will serve as the primary local interface to foster seamless cross-functional collaboration, while driving continuous engineering improvements—such as CI/CD, test automation, and root-cause analysis—to establish robust delivery practices. By focusing on embedded engineering fundamentals and structured knowledge sharing, you will continuously elevate the team's autonomous technical capabilities and long-term delivery ownership.
Responsibilities
- Team and delivery: Build and lead the xPON OLT embedded software team: day-to-day management, goal breakdown, iteration and staffing plans, performance and development. Deliver and maintain OLT software releases on schedule with expected quality. Under the WW R&D Leader, align team objectives with global release cadence and quality expectations; escalate risks and resource needs in a timely manner.
- Communication and collaboration: Serve as the primary interface for the Malaysia team with WW R&D, other R&D sites, and adjacent functions (product, test, hardware, etc.). Organize requirements and design reviews; keep information transparent and issues escalated and closed. With support from domain experts and global teams, ensure shared understanding and consistent execution locally.
- Engineering and continuous improvement: Establish and maintain a workable delivery rhythm and ways of working for the team. Continuously improve process and practices (e.g. planning and tracking, code review, quality gates, CI/CD, test automation, RCA). Focus on delivery quality and maintainability; drive root-cause analysis and improvement closure; build repeatable team habits.
- Capability and pipeline: Rely on global experts for xPON/broadband access domain depth; focus on learning ability and embedded engineering fundamentals in the team. Knowledge sharing, documentation, and pipeline development to grow the team’s autonomous delivery capability on OLT product software over time.
Qualifications
You have:
- Bachelor’s degree or above in telecommunications, electronics, computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Fluent English for day-to-day work with WW R&D and global teams (meetings, email, documents, verbal communication).
- 8+ years of software development experience, primarily device or embedded software; at least 3 years as software development team manager or software technical lead. Able to independently own goal breakdown, scheduling and resource coordination, performance management, people development, and routine conflict handling.
- Hands-on device or carrier-grade embedded software development: proficient in C/C++ and Linux-based development and integration; understands release management, defect tracking, and basic quality and risk control. Deep xPON/PON protocol expertise is not required at hire; candidate must be willing and able to learn the business and domain quickly on the job (supported by the team and global experts).
- Strong communication and collaboration: experience working across time zones, cultures, and teams; listens well, communicates clearly, drives alignment; proactively clarifies and escalates when information is incomplete so delivery does not stall on communication gaps.
- Continuous improvement and development process: familiar with Agile/DevOps development practices; cares about process and efficiency and can lead the team in incremental improvements; organizes post-mortems for major or recurring issues and tracks actions to closure.
- Preferred (not required): Telecom equipment, broadband access, OLT, or similar chassis/box device software experience; RTOS or other embedded OS experience; PMP or familiarity with common R&D quality systems (e.g. CMMI/ISO).
