This role

PayJoy provides cell phone financing and general credit in emerging markets to underserved customers who previously lacked access to traditional credit and banking. We are seeking a Philippines-based tax expert whose initial focus will be primarily on the Philippines, with additional responsibility for establishing tax infrastructure in India and Indonesia. This includes tax registrations, compliance calendars, advisor coordination, reporting processes, and controls to support launches and growth. The role will also support future expansion into markets such as Vietnam. Reporting to the Global Head of Tax, this role combines hands-on execution with independent technical judgment across complex tax environments. The role must connect tax decisions with customer financing, product design, and profitable growth. This is a senior individual contributor role with no direct reports, leading through technical expertise, advisor oversight, and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Philippines Tax Ownership and Regional Advisor Oversight: Own Philippines tax compliance and the regional tax calendar. Review and challenge returns, calculations, and technical positions prepared by KPMG and other advisors. Coordinate timely filings, payments, and reconciliations with Finance. Scope includes corporate income tax, VAT/GST, withholding taxes, Philippine EWT, FWT and DST, and applicable Indonesia and India obligations as operations develop.
  • Tax Provision and Accounting: Review quarterly and annual tax provision work products prepared by KPMG under local GAAP and US GAAP. Evaluate key assumptions, current and deferred tax calculations, temporary and permanent differences, deferred tax asset recoverability, and uncertain tax positions. Review supporting schedules and proposed tax journal entries, resolve questions with KPMG, and coordinate reporting and booking with Controllers and Global Tax. Explain effective tax rate movements and flag material issues to the Global Head of Tax.
  • Transfer Pricing and Intercompany Transactions: Review transfer pricing calculations, quarterly true-ups, and documentation prepared by Global Tax and external advisors. Coordinate data collection, timelines, and implementation with KPMG, Global Tax, and local Finance teams. Review intercompany charges, financing arrangements, withholding tax treatment, local deductibility, treaty eligibility, and documentation requirements. Resolve review questions and escalate material issues with recommended actions.
  • Growth and Product Tax Support: Focus initially primarily on the Philippines, while coordinating the establishment of tax infrastructure in India and Indonesia, including registrations, compliance processes, advisor arrangements, and reporting controls. Support future Vietnam expansion. Assess tax implications of financing products, interest and fees, credit losses, customer invoicing, funding flows, and cross-border payments. Partner with Finance, Legal, Product, and Operations to establish tax requirements before launches and operational changes. Document recommendations, implementation steps, and issues requiring Global Head of Tax approval.
  • Tax Audits and Controversies: Lead regional coordination of tax authority audits, assessments, and inquiries, including the BIR, Indonesian Directorate General of Taxes, and Indian tax authorities. Develop response strategies with advisors, review submissions and supporting evidence, assess potential exposure, and communicate recommendations and deadlines to the Global Head of Tax.
  • Tax Controls and Operational Compliance: Build scalable tax processes for customer financing in emerging markets. Partner with Finance and systems teams on compliant invoicing, transaction data, reconciliations, and record retention. Identify control gaps, drive corrective actions, and maintain evidence suitable for internal and external audit review.
  • Tax Planning and Regional Leadership: Identify and quantify practical opportunities to improve cash tax outcomes and reduce tax risk. Present recommendations, implementation requirements, and tradeoffs to the Global Head of Tax. Monitor tax developments, guide implementation, manage advisor scope and fees, and provide technical coaching to regional Finance colleagues.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field. Philippine CPA or an equivalent professional qualification is preferred.
  • Experience: 8–10 years of progressive tax experience in a multinational business and/or professional services firm, including at least 3 years independently leading complex tax workstreams, reviewing deliverables, and advising business stakeholders. Experience supporting growing businesses, new products, or market launches is strongly preferred. Big 4 experience is preferred.
  • Technical Expertise and Leadership:
  • Demonstrated ability to critically review corporate income tax, VAT/GST, and withholding tax positions, and quarterly and annual tax provision work products prepared by external advisors. Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and local GAAP tax accounting, with the ability to evaluate assumptions, identify issues, and document review conclusions.
  • Practical experience reviewing transfer pricing calculations and documentation and coordinating implementation of group policies. Ability to assess intercompany financing, withholding taxes, treaty claims, and deductibility, and connect local requirements with group tax policies and commercial priorities.
  • Proven ability to review and challenge external advisor work, lead audit responses, and deliver complex projects with limited day-to-day supervision. Experience coaching colleagues or leading project teams is required; prior direct people management experience is preferred.
  • Regional and Industry Experience: Substantial hands-on Philippines tax experience is required. Asia regional tax experience in emerging markets is strongly preferred, particularly Indonesia, India, and Vietnam. Experience in fintech, consumer lending, financial services, or businesses serving underbanked customers is an advantage. Candidates should demonstrate sound judgment in unfamiliar markets and the ability to manage local advisors and turn technical advice into practical actions.
  • Communication and Judgment: Strong written and verbal English, including the ability to explain tax conclusions, financial impacts, and recommended actions to US leadership and regional teams. Ability to work through incomplete information, prioritize competing growth and compliance demands, challenge advisor conclusions constructively, and escalate material risks.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
