The Role

Reporting to the Oregon Region Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) of Providence Portland Medical Foundation serves as the senior fundraising executive responsible for leading a comprehensive philanthropy program that advances the mission, strategic priorities, and long-term sustainability of Providence Portland Medical Center. The CPO develops and executes innovative fundraising and donor engagement strategies that inspire philanthropic investment in programs, services, facilities, research, education, and patient care initiatives that improve the health and well-being of the communities Providence serves. As a key member of the hospital leadership team, the CPO collaborates closely with executive leaders, physicians, caregivers, foundation board members, volunteers, and community stakeholders to identify philanthropic priorities, deepen constituent engagement, and foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

The CPO works in partnership with a high-performing development team to drive principal, major, planned, corporate, foundation, and annual giving efforts, while ensuring exceptional donor stewardship and engagement. The role also collaborates closely with system-level philanthropy shared services leaders and colleagues across finance, operations, prospect management, events, marketing and communications, and analytics to deliver a coordinated, donor-centered fundraising program. Through strategic leadership, relationship building, and operational excellence, the CPO will strengthen philanthropic performance, enhance community partnerships, expand donor support, and secure transformational resources that advance the exceptional care, innovation, and mission of Providence.

What You'll Do

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive philanthropy strategy aligned with Providence Portland Medical Center's mission, strategic priorities, and growth objectives.
  • Partner with hospital leadership, physicians, and foundation board members to identify and advance philanthropic priorities.
  • Lead fundraising efforts across annual, major, principal, planned, corporate, and foundation giving programs.
  • Strengthen donor pipeline development through grateful patient fundraising, donor acquisition, retention, and stewardship strategies.
  • Build and sustain a culture of philanthropy among caregivers, volunteers, physicians, community partners, and donors.

Fundraising & Donor Engagement

  • Maintain and actively manage a portfolio of principal and major gift prospects and donors.
  • Lead strategies that increase philanthropic support and deepen long-term donor engagement.
  • Oversee donor recognition, impact reporting, and stewardship programs that demonstrate the value and outcomes of philanthropic investment.
  • Represent Providence Portland Medical Foundation at events, donor gatherings, and key philanthropic activities.

Foundation Financial Stewardship

  • Partner closely with finance and shared services leaders to ensure responsible stewardship of foundation assets and philanthropic resources.
  • Monitor foundation funds, endowed assets, restricted gifts, and fund balances to ensure compliance with donor intent and organizational policies.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial reporting on foundation assets, fund balances, distributions, and philanthropic performance to boards, committees, and organizational leadership.
  • Collaborate with finance partners on budget development, forecasting, distributions, and long-term financial planning.
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager with the foundation's investment management firm, facilitating regular performance reviews, reporting, and strategic discussions.

Board & Committee Leadership

  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Providence Portland Medical Foundation Board of Trustees and board committees.
  • Partner with board leadership to establish strategic priorities, annual work plans, governance activities, and meeting agendas.
  • Prepare and present fundraising, financial, and strategic reports to foundation boards and committees.
  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, development, and engagement of board and committee members.
  • Engage volunteer leaders as ambassadors, advocates, and philanthropic partners in support of Providence Portland Medical Center.
  • Foster strong relationships between volunteer leadership, hospital leadership, physicians, and the broader community.

Team Leadership & Partnership

  • Partner with development professionals, philanthropy shared services teams, and hospital leaders to achieve fundraising goals and advance strategic priorities.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • Support talent development through mentorship, coaching, and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead with resilience, transparency, and optimism while effectively navigating change.
  • Model Providence values and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, and stewardship.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure fundraising activities are effectively planned, coordinated, and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Partner with philanthropy shared services teams to optimize fundraising operations, reporting, prospect management, donor relations, and communications.
  • Oversee annual philanthropic budgets and ensure effective management of departmental resources.

Relationship Building & Collaboration

  • Build trusted relationships with hospital executives, physicians, foundation leaders, caregivers, volunteers, donors, and community partners.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to hospital leadership on fundraising opportunities, philanthropic priorities, and community engagement.
  • Collaborate across Providence Oregon and system-wide philanthropy teams to advance shared goals and initiatives.
  • Inspire stakeholders around a compelling case for support and a shared vision for Providence Portland Medical Center's future.
  • Align philanthropic investments with organizational priorities to maximize impact for patients, caregivers, and the community.

Communication & Advocacy

  • Serve as a visible ambassador for Providence Portland Medical Foundation and healthcare philanthropy throughout the community.
  • Partner with marketing, communications, and donor engagement teams to develop compelling fundraising campaigns and communications.
  • Communicate the impact of philanthropy through storytelling that inspires donor investment and community support.
  • Collaborate with hospital leaders, physicians, and foundation board members to advance fundraising strategies and engagement efforts.
  • Celebrate and share stories demonstrating the impact of philanthropy on patients, caregivers, programs, research, education, and community health.
  • Build trust and confidence among internal and external stakeholders through effective communication, transparency, and meaningful engagement.

What You'll Bring

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field; or equivalent education/experience.
  • Coursework/Training (preferred).
  • Master's Degree in a related field (preferred).
  • Preferred upon hire: CPA or JD or certification in financial counseling.

Experience & Expertise

  • 10 or more years of philanthropy or other directly related fundraising experience.
  • 5 years of progressive management and leadership.
  • Financial management (budgeting, forecasting, planning, monitoring).
  • Healthcare industry.
  • Human resources management (e.g., selection, promotion, training and development, progressive discipline). Developing Talent.
  • Industry rules, regulations and compliance requirements.

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

PLEASE ADJUST ACCORDINGLY: At Providence we believe in the importance of human connection and the impact of in-person collaboration towards team cohesion and caregiver engagement. Further, we want our leaders to live in or near the communities we serve. Therefore, leaders applying for this role will be required to work a hybrid schedule, which consists of three days onsite, two days remote and live within a reasonable commuting distance to the ministry or service area they support and lead.

The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors.
