Structural Steel Field Surveyor
Location: Maryland or Virginia – Field-Based Job Type: Direct Hire Starting Pay: $30/hour, higher depending on experience
Position Overview
We are hiring a Field Surveyor to support structural steel construction throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This position focuses on field layout, measurements, alignment, and survey work during steel installation. Regular travel to active construction sites is required.
Responsibilities
- Perform field measurements and collect survey information for structural steel projects.
- Establish and verify building control lines, column locations, and anchor rod positions.
- Check elevations, embed placement, and structural alignment.
- Prepare and maintain as-built drawings based on field conditions.
- Provide layout and alignment support during structural steel erection.
- Work with steel erection crews and other trades to maintain proper plumbness, positioning, and structural accuracy.
- Assist with the installation of structural and miscellaneous metals, including stairs, shafts, and related components.
- Operate surveying equipment such as total stations and similar instruments.
- Use Trimble, Bluebeam, CAD, and Microsoft Office for field and project-related work.
- Follow established safety procedures while working on active construction sites.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in field surveying or structural steel erection.
- Experience with surveying slopes, grades, and layout for structural and miscellaneous metals.
- Proficiency with total stations or comparable surveying equipment.
- Working knowledge of AISC standards related to building alignment and orientation.
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Able to communicate effectively and work with field crews, contractors, and other trades.
- Willing and able to travel regularly to job sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
- Comfortable working at heights, including aerial lifts and elevated steel floors.
