Structural Steel QC Inspector
Job Type: Contract-to-Hire Shift: 1st Shift Pay: Up to $32/hour, depending on experience
Position Summary
We are looking for a Quality Control Inspector with structural steel fabrication experience to help verify that steel components, welds, materials, and coatings meet required specifications and industry standards.
This is a hands-on shop position with most of the work performed on the production floor. The role involves regular standing, walking, and inspection work in a manufacturing environment that may have varying temperatures and limited office time.
What You'll Do
- Inspect structural steel parts and completed fabrications for accuracy and compliance.
- Review work against project drawings, specifications, and applicable quality requirements.
- Verify fabrication and welding meet AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, AISC, and other applicable standards.
- Check incoming steel, materials, parts, and consumables for proper condition and conformance.
- Mark and document inspected materials according to established procedures.
- Maintain inspection reports, quality logs, and other required documentation.
- Maintain and calibrate welding equipment and quality inspection instruments.
- Assist with welder qualification testing and certification.
- Support training related to welding, fitting, and quality requirements.
- Maintain drawing control and assist with other quality-control processes.
- Work with production and management to investigate and resolve quality issues.
- Participate in continuous improvement and company training activities.
- Promote safe work practices and support workplace safety programs.
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of structural steel fabrication experience.
- Previous experience in quality control, inspection, or manufacturing.
- Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC standards.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and specifications.
- Experience using inspection equipment such as: Fillet weld gauges V-WAC gauges Squares Tape measures Other standard quality inspection tools Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Experience
- Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- Experience with nondestructive testing, including: Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) Penetrant Testing (PT) Additional certifications involving structural steel fabrication, bolting, coatings, or welding inspection. Previous experience working in a steel manufacturing or fabrication facility.
Work Environment
- Primarily performed on the production floor with limited office work.
- Active structural steel manufacturing environment.
- Non-climate-controlled facility.
- Requires extended periods of standing and walking while inspecting materials and fabrication work.
