The role provides hands-on technical leadership in managing risks associated with high-hazard chemical and aerosol manufacturing operations, with a strong focus on regulatory compliance, operational risk reduction, and timely closure of identified SHE gaps.

Working closely with site leadership and reporting to the Regional SHE Manager, the role drives continuous improvement through effective deployment of SHE standards, compliance assessments, corrective actions, and verification of operational controls. Success requires strong technical expertise, visible shop-floor engagement, and the ability to influence and develop operational teams to take ownership of day-to-day SHE performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Legal Compliance: Lead site compliance with applicable Nigerian SHE legislation, regulatory permits, statutory inspections, and reporting requirements, maintaining an accurate legal obligations register and closing identified gaps.
  • SCJ SHE Standards: Drive implementation, compliance assessments, and continuous improvement of SCJ global SHE Standards, ensuring effective operational controls and documented evidence of compliance.
  • Process Safety: Lead site-level implementation of process safety requirements for aerosol and high-hazard chemical operations, including flammable materials, hazardous areas, ignition source control, and fire and explosion prevention.
  • Risk Management: Coordinate Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), operational risk assessments, periodic revalidations, and implementation of identified risk reduction measures.
  • Critical Equipment Assurance: Partner with Engineering and Maintenance to ensure SHE-critical equipment is appropriately inspected, tested, maintained, and verified for safe operation.
  • Audit and CAPA Management: Lead SHE compliance audits, workplace inspections, GEMBA, and behavioral observations, ensuring timely closure and effectiveness verification of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Incident Management: Lead investigations of SHE incidents and near misses, identify root causes, and implement sustainable corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Management of Change: Ensure SHE risks associated with equipment, process, material, and operational changes are adequately assessed and controlled through the MOC process.
  • Contractor Safety: Drive contractor SHE compliance, including onboarding, risk assessments, safe work permits, and controls for high-hazard activities.
  • Training and Capability: Lead site SHE training and competency programs, developing operational SHE champions and strengthening employee ownership of safety and environmental performance.
  • Performance Management: Maintain accurate SHE records and reporting in Entropy, analyze trends, track performance indicators, and drive targeted improvement plans.
  • Operational Leadership: Maintain a strong shop-floor presence, working with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and site leadership to identify risks, reinforce standards, and improve SHE execution.
  • Stakeholder and Regulatory Engagement: Support regulatory inspections, coordinate resolution of identified findings, and provide technical SHE guidance to site leadership.
  • SHE Planning and Governance: Support site SHE objectives, budgets, improvement initiatives, and regular performance reviews with the Plant and Regional SHE Manager.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive SHE experience in manufacturing, preferably in chemical, aerosol, FMCG, or other high-hazard operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in Nigerian SHE regulatory compliance, including legal requirements, statutory permits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.
  • Proven experience implementing SHE management systems, corporate SHE standards, compliance assessments, and corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Practical experience in high-hazard chemical process safety management (PSM), including flammable materials, fire and explosion prevention, and operational risk controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify and resolve SHE compliance gaps, influence operational teams, and drive day-to-day SHE ownership through shop-floor engagement.

Preferred Skills:

  • Advanced degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
  • Professional SHE certification or registration, such as ISPON, NEBOSH Diploma, CSP, CMIOSH, CIH, CFPS, or equivalent.
  • Additional training or certification in Process Safety Management (PSM), HAZOP, ISO 45001, or ISO 14001 preferred.
  • Experience in aerosol, chemical, or other high-hazard manufacturing operations.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and leadership skills, with the ability to build trust and drive accountability across operational teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including engagement with regulatory authorities and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and project management skills, with a proven ability to prioritize and deliver multiple improvement initiatives.
  • Experience coaching and developing operational teams to strengthen SHE ownership and performance.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
