The posting

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The Assistant White House Editor will play a central role in shaping the Washington Bureau report, supporting the White House editor and collaborating with other teams as news requires. This editor will manage reporters, help launch and edit news and enterprise stories focused on the President, and will help coordinate coverage across platforms. Operating in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, this editor will help monitor ongoing developments on multiple fronts, and assist the White House editor in planning, making assignments, editing stories and thinking creatively about how to advance our report to serve our audiences.

The Assistant White House Editor also collaborates with other newsroom departments and stakeholders, monitoring daily and weekly priorities, helping to manage daily story planning and budgeting, getting reporters launched on stories and doing first or second-editing. This editor will manage the team when the White House editor is absent and shares responsibility for managing coverage of events on nights and weekends.

At a time when the news priorities can shift rapidly, this editor will sometimes be deployed to jump on other developments, work with other teams and support live coverage.

This editor should be able to move quickly across storylines without sacrificing accuracy and tone. Experience managing reporters or other editors is essential, as is a demonstrated ability to make thoughtful news judgements under pressure. Experience with White House coverage is a plus.

This position is based in Washington, D.C. and may include night and weekend coverage. It includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

You will report to the White House editor.

Responsibilities:

  • You will serve as a deputy first editor for the White House team, stepping in to support the White House editor. You will assign and cover first edits for breaking, live news and some enterprise stories, ensuring continuity of coverage and clear direction for reporters across beats.
  • You will handle edits of all sorts, including quick cuts, write-throughs, live stories, dailies and lead-alls as needed.
  • You will help set up weekend and off‑peak Washington coverage for these teams, including assigning, editing and coordinating with the News Director, editors managing live and breaking news stories as well as staff editors on key stories and providing additional support for stories that move or break at night, on weekends or holidays.
  • You will be nimble and flexible about being directed to other news developments and coverage teams as necessary and to work across platforms.
  • You will support live and alternative formats, helping decide when developments should go into live files versus traditional stories, and partnering with other news editors as needed.
  • You will be organized and work in close partnership with other editors on the bureau to build out the day's budget and update the week's budget, anticipating news needs and planning future coverage.
  • You will be skilled at anticipating potential problems, addressing unexpected issues and finding solutions.
  • You will help identify potential stories, including non-traditional story formats, visual stories, service and explanatory pieces.
  • You will coordinate with editors and the audience team on story publication and promotion plans and foster group headline brainstorming and promotion planning.
  • You will work in close partnership with the Weekend Editor on planning handoffs at the start and mid-points of the week so we have clarity and continuity in our storylines and with other editors on the team to help identify potential stories, assign and edit the daily report.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years' experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization
  • Editing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical standards.
  • Proven news judgment.
  • Previous experience managing and editing reporters.
  • Previous experience juggling multiple storylines with rigor and judgment.
  • Experience with coverage of some combination of government, policy and politics.
  • Openness to and comfort with new story forms, live coverage and adopting new ways of working as the newsroom's needs evolve.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • People management experience
  • A willingness to be nimble and flexible in anticipating potential problems, addressing unexpected issues and finding solutions.
  • A strong understanding of Times style and standards
  • A willingness to collaborate and the ability to partner with colleagues across The New York Times newsroom.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
