Job Description

The Packing Tech 1 ensures products are bagged, labeled, and prepared for shipping in accordance with company quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general plant and workstation housekeeping, including sweeping, vacuuming warehouse floors, cleaning spills, emptying waste hoppers, and transporting waste to designated disposal areas.
  • Pack paper bags of various weights while maintaining required weight specifications and troubleshooting packaging equipment.
  • Set target weights and packing control settings and perform weight checks and equipment calibration using appropriate test weights.
  • Collect samples from packaging and production areas as required.
  • Perform bulk bag filling, weighing, sampling, and weight verification.
  • Load and sample bulk hopper cars.
  • Operate palletizing equipment, including setting layers, changing bag patterns, and following LOTOTO procedures.
  • Program production codes and lot information into inkjet systems.
  • Assist the Lead Packer with creating code stickers, tagging bags, warehousing products, and other packaging activities.
  • Operate Barcom scanning equipment and complete re-warehousing transactions.
  • Complete required mobile equipment inspections and safely use the propane filling station for applicable equipment.
  • Complete required documentation, including bulk bag weight reports, sample cards, re-warehousing forms, and packing logs.
  • Read and follow work instructions and identify appropriate bag types, labels, product weights, and packaging requirements.
  • Identify and properly use the various pallet types required by the plant.
  • Stamp or label bags as required before warehousing finished products.
  • Cross-train with the Lead Packer to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide coverage when needed.
  • Operate a propane-powered floor sweeper and perform general warehouse housekeeping.
  • Perform general plant cleanup and groundskeeping, including trash removal and weed removal, as needed.
  • Use designated cleaning equipment, including fire hoses, to clean processing areas.
  • Operate plant equipment such as dump trucks, Bobcats, and vacuum trucks as needed and when qualified.
  • Operate forklifts to support production, shipping, and other plant operations.
  • Refeed off-weight or out-of-specification bags through the designated refeed station.
  • Attend required training classes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required Qualifications:High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Strong commitment to safety, quality, and attention to detail. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to operate equipment and safely use hand tools such as shovels, hammers, and wrenches. Ability to work outdoors in all seasonal conditions, climb multiple levels using stairs and ladders, and work from elevated platforms. Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness and monitors own work to ensure quality. Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential to success in this role. Strong safety record.
  • Preferred Qualifications:Manufacturing experience. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) knowledge. Forklift operating experience. Warehouse experience. Experience using computer software.
