Electrical Designer - Power Generation

Position Summary

We are seeking an Electrical Designer to support the design and development of electrical systems for power generation facilities and related energy infrastructure projects. This position will work closely with Professional Engineers, project managers, mechanical engineers, controls engineers, equipment vendors, utilities, and field personnel to develop accurate and constructible electrical drawings and design documentation.

The Electrical Designer will assist with projects involving new generating facilities, plant expansions, equipment replacements, electrical upgrades, and modifications to existing facilities. The successful candidate will have experience producing detailed electrical drawings using AutoCAD and/or other electrical design software and will understand industrial power systems, electrical equipment, and construction practices.

Work will be performed under the direction and technical supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Design and Drafting

  • Develop and revise electrical drawings for power generation and industrial facilities based on engineering calculations, equipment information, field data, and direction from the project engineer.
  • Prepare electrical drawing packages that may include:

o Single-line diagrams

o Three-line diagrams

o Electrical site plans

o Power distribution plans

o Equipment layouts

o Grounding and bonding plans

o Raceway and conduit plans

o Cable tray layouts

o Control and wiring diagrams

o Schematic diagrams

o Interconnection diagrams

o Panel schedules

o Equipment termination details

o Electrical construction details

  • Develop equipment layouts incorporating generators, transformers, switchgear, motor control centers,
  • electrical panels, and other electrical equipment.
  • Assist engineers in developing electrical distribution systems from generation equipment through plant auxiliary systems and utility interconnections.
  • Incorporate equipment specifications into project design packages.
  • Maintain drawing standards, title blocks, symbols, details, and electrical CAD libraries.

Engineering Support

Assist Professional Engineers with the development of electrical design packages for power generation projects.

Support preparation of:

o Equipment specifications

o Electrical equipment schedules

o Load lists

o Cable schedules

o Conduit schedules

o Bills of material

o Construction cost estimates

  • Support engineers performing short-circuit, protective-device coordination, and arc-flash studies by collecting and organizing equipment and system data.
  • Coordinate electrical designs with mechanical, structural, civil, instrumentation and controls, and process disciplines.
  • Review equipment submittals and vendor drawings for consistency with project drawings and specifications.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Experience producing electrical construction drawings and detailed design packages.
  • Working knowledge of industrial low-voltage and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, equipment drawings, and construction documents.
  • Understanding of electrical equipment including generators, transformers, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, panelboards, UPS systems, batteries, and associated control systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical codes and standards, including the National Electrical Code NEC/NFPA 70).
  • Ability to coordinate electrical designs with other engineering disciplines.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.

Education and Experience

Education

  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent experience in Electrical Design, Electrical Engineering
  • Technology, Drafting/Design Technology, or a related field.
  • 2-4+ years of electrical design or drafting experience in power generation, utilities, industrial facilities, manufacturing, oil and gas, data centers, or similar complex electrical environments preferred.
