Job Description

PLAY, GROW and WIN

To be a part of Virtuos means to be a creator.

At Virtuos, we harness the latest technologies to make games better and more immersive than ever before. That is why we pride ourselves in constantly pushing the boundaries of possibility since our founding in 2004.

Virtuosi is a team of experts – people who have come together to share their mutual passion for making and playing games. People with the same enthusiasm for exploring new ideas and the constant drive to excel in their field. People who believe in earning success through dedication.

At Virtuos, we are at the forefront of gaming, creating exciting new experiences daily. Join us to Play, Grow and Win – together.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Responsibilities

  • Own the design of game mechanics and systems from concept through paper design, prototyping, implementation, tuning, and delivery.
  • Partner with level designers so each layout expresses its mechanic and drives player decisions.
  • Design competitive multiplayer rules, scoring, and match flow, and balance them for fairness and fun.
  • Design and tune the behavior parameters of AI-driven characters.
  • Design systems as data: define configurable parameters with clear value ranges so engineers can build them and QA can test their limits.
  • Write and maintain detailed design documentation to the client's template and standard. Define success metrics for each mechanic and use playtest feedback and telemetry data to tune it.
  • Review existing designs, identify gaps and risks, and propose improvements with clear reasoning.
  • Present designs to the client's design team and refine them together.
  • Work with engineers and artists to keep the implementation true to the design intent.
  • Work with QA to find, reproduce, and fix reported issues. Share knowledge and mentor other designers.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years in a game design role.
  • Shipped at least one full-cycle title, from pre-production to launch, on console, PC, or a major mobile title in a game design role.
  • Proven ability to design within mobile constraints, shown through a shipped mobile title, a shipped mobile mode, or a strong portfolio project.
  • Strong grasp of core game systems, metagame systems, and control systems.
  • Experience designing and balancing competitive multiplayer mechanics.
  • Comfortable working in a data-driven, config-based game design pipeline.
  • Proficient in Unity.
  • Able to write clear, structured design documentation.
  • Able to build quick prototypes.
  • Proactive in taking on tasks and raising problems to the right stakeholders.
  • Able to take feedback, act on it, and give clear feedback to others.
  • Able to prioritize tasks and deliver quality work on time.
  • Mandarin Chinese, required for daily work with our client.
  • English at an adequate level, for meetings, documentation, and collaboration with English-speaking colleagues and clients. Native English fluency is not required.

Strongly preferred

  • Console or PC experience on a shipped AA or AAA title.
  • Scripting with Unity C# or Lua for prototyping and tuning.
  • Experience with designing mini games or user-generated content, professional or personal.
  • Experience shipping both single-player and multiplayer systems.

Bonus

  • Experience with other engines and scripting tools, such as Unreal Engine, Blueprints, or Godot.
  • Experience with UI/UX/HUD or monetization design.
  • Experience with level design or level integration.
  • Experience leading a game feature with a small team of designers or a cross-functional team.
  • Experience working across multiple studios in a co-development setting.
  • Experience working in an English-speaking environment.
  • Willing to travel and work at our other studios in China when a project needs it.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
