Job Description

Job Summary Weatherford is seeking a motivated and experienced Engineering Manager to join our expanding software engineering organization to develop industry leading software solutions for the energy industry. Engineering Manager leads a high-performing, cross-functional engineering team responsible for the continuous delivery of product features and platform improvements. This role bridges engineering execution and organizational strategy: the Engineering Manager is accountable for the health, capability, and output of the delivery team, while partnering closely with Product Management to ensure technical execution remains tightly aligned to business outcomes. This role is expected to be deeply technical enough to participate in architectural discussions and code reviews, while spending most of their time on team effectiveness, people development, and delivery leadership.

Responsibilities TEAM LEADERSHIP AND PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT • Directly manage a team of engineers across varying seniority levels, providing consistent coaching, feedback, and career development support. • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports to maintain alignment, surface blockers, and support individual growth. • Lead structured performance reviews and merit calibrations in partnership with HR. • Identify skill gaps within the team and develop targeted capability-building plans through mentoring, training, and hiring. • Foster a culture of psychological safety, continuous learning, and constructive feedback. • Champion diversity and inclusion in hiring processes, team norms, and day-to-day interactions.

DELIVERY LEADERSHIP AND PLANNING • Own the overall delivery health of the engineering team, ensuring sprint commitments are realistic, tracked, and met with consistency. • Partner with Product Owners and Product Managers to align capacity to priorities and communicate delivery forecasts. • Facilitate effective Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, retrospectives, and quarterly planning sessions. • Monitor and act on team-level delivery metrics including velocity, cycle time, deployment frequency, and change failure rate. • Identify systemic delivery risks and remove organizational impediments that block team progress. • Manage dependencies between delivery teams and escalate cross-team blockers with urgency and transparency.

ENGINEERING QUALITY AND STANDARDS • Establish and enforce engineering standards for code quality, testing, documentation, and deployment practices. • Ensure the team maintains adequate test coverage, code review rigor, and adherence to the definition of done. • Drive adoption of automation-first practices across the delivery lifecycle. • Monitor production health through observability metrics and lead post-incident reviews with a focus on systemic improvement. • Partner with the Technical Lead to ensure architectural decisions align with long-term platform strategy.

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION • Act as the primary engineering point of contact for Product Management and other Support functions. • Represent the engineering team in leadership forums, quarterly business reviews, and planning sessions. • Communicate engineering progress, risks, and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders with clarity and confidence. • Collaborate with Talent Acquisition to define role requirements, participate in structured interviews, and make data-informed hiring decisions. • Work across the organization to align shared engineering standards, tooling, and practices.

TECHNICAL CONTRIBUTION AND OVERSIGHT • Remain technically engaged through code reviews, architecture discussions, and design document review. • Contribute to technical roadmap planning, helping translate business objectives into sequenced engineering initiatives. • Evaluate and introduce new tools, frameworks, and practices that improve developer experience and delivery outcomes. • Apply AI-assisted development and productivity tooling across the team to accelerate delivery without sacrificing quality

OPERATIONAL AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT • Drive continuous improvement through regular retrospectives, blameless post-mortems, and structured process reviews. • Maintain team capacity, attrition risk, and onboarding timelines to ensure continuity of delivery. • Contribute to engineering org-level initiatives including hiring programs, onboard improvements, and capability frameworks.

Skills/Education Required • 10 years of software engineering experience, including at least 5 years in management. • Demonstrated success leading product engineering teams in Agile delivery environments. • Experience managing the full engineering delivery lifecycle from sprint planning through production deployment. • Proven track record of growing and retaining engineering talent through coaching, mentoring, and structured development. • Practical understanding of software delivery metrics and experience using data to drive team improvement. • Experience contributing to technical hiring processes including job design, interviewing, and candidate evaluation. • Skilled at building high-trust, high-performance teams through consistent coaching and clear expectations. • Demonstrates empathy, clarity, and directness in managing performance and development conversations. • Capable of navigating conflict constructively and maintaining team cohesion during ambiguity. • Strong grasp of Agile delivery frameworks and ability to adapt practices to team context. • Experienced in dependency management, capacity planning, and delivery forecasting. • Data-driven in identifying bottlenecks and making process interventions. • Sufficient technical depth to participate in architecture discussions and code quality decisions. • Able to identify engineering risk and challenge assumptions with informed questions. • Understands the trade-offs between speed, quality, and maintainability in product delivery. • Communicates engineering priorities and constraints to product and business stakeholders with confidence. • Advocates for engineering investment, technical debt reduction, and platform improvements. • Builds trusted relationships with peers in product, design, data, and platform functions.

Skills/Education Preferred • Experience in Oil and Gas domain. • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and platform engineering concepts. • Experience implementing or scaling developer experience improvements across teams. • Exposure to AI-assisted development tooling and demonstrated curiosity about productivity automation. • Experience managing distributed or cross-functional teams across geographies.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
