The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer/C Developer – PGD based in Ireland.

This is a fully remote EMEA opportunity focused on developing and evolving a high-availability distributed PostgreSQL solution. You will work on a multi-master database technology designed for geographically distributed, enterprise-scale workloads. The role spans architecture, software development, testing, documentation, performance optimization, and production support. You will contribute to technically complex challenges involving replication, consistency, fault tolerance, and distributed systems. The position offers the opportunity to work on a large, long-lived codebase alongside an internationally distributed engineering team. You will collaborate closely with other engineers through code reviews, design discussions, debugging, and continuous improvement. This role is well suited to an experienced C developer with strong PostgreSQL knowledge and a passion for reliable distributed database systems.

Accountabilities

  • Design, develop, test, and document new capabilities for a multi-master distributed PostgreSQL product.
  • Contribute to architecture and technical design decisions for distributed database functionality.
  • Maintain, enhance, and optimize existing capabilities to improve performance, reliability, usability, and scalability.
  • Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into clearly defined, executable engineering tasks.
  • Investigate complex software and database issues and provide high-quality production support to enterprise customers.
  • Diagnose performance and reliability problems using systematic debugging and analysis techniques.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to maintain strong engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders across a globally distributed development organization.
  • Work effectively with multi-version and multi-branch codebases, including active backporting and release workflows.
  • Contribute to build, testing, CI/CD, and software delivery processes.
  • Help maintain high standards for technical documentation, testing, maintainability, and production readiness.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in C programming and experience developing production-quality systems software.
  • Practical experience with PostgreSQL internals, such as the storage engine, WAL, replication, catalog system, or extension development.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts, including replication topologies, consensus, conflict resolution, eventual consistency, and failure modes.
  • Experience working with large, long-lived codebases that use multiple branches, versions, and backporting workflows.
  • Familiarity with modern build systems and CI/CD practices.
  • Strong Git skills and experience working with complex branching strategies.
  • Excellent debugging, troubleshooting, and performance analysis capabilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex database and distributed-system behavior.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a globally distributed engineering team.
  • Prior contributions to PostgreSQL or other open-source database projects are a plus.
  • Experience with logical replication, logical decoding, or custom replication solutions is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of distributed consensus algorithms such as Raft is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the PostgreSQL extension API and hook system is beneficial.
  • Experience with high-availability architectures and failover mechanisms is an advantage.
  • Experience with Python and/or Rust is a plus.
  • Experience with major cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Ansible, Docker, and Kubernetes is an advantage.
  • 100% remote work within the EMEA region.
  • Opportunity to work on advanced distributed database and PostgreSQL technologies.
  • Exposure to complex challenges involving high availability, geographic distribution, replication, and enterprise workloads.
  • Collaboration with a globally distributed team of experienced software and database engineers.
  • Access to health and wellness resources, including CuraLinc.
  • Wellness Fridays available through December 2026.
  • Additional region-specific benefits and perks depending on location.
  • Opportunity to contribute to open-source database technologies and develop deep expertise in distributed systems.
  • Remote-first environment designed to support collaboration and work-life balance.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
