About the Company
Our client is a fast-growing European deep-tech company developing advanced autonomous systems for aerospace and defence applications.
Combining sophisticated software engineering, simulation technologies, and intelligent autonomous systems, the company is building next-generation solutions for complex operational environments.
As the engineering organization continues to scale, we are looking for an experienced Flight Simulation Software Engineer to take ownership of the software architecture and development of simulation environments used to test and validate autonomous systems.
This is a hands-on software engineering position with significant architectural responsibility, working closely with specialists in embedded software, autonomy, and Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC).
Your Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain scalable simulation software architectures for autonomous aerospace systems. Build and integrate simulation environments using platforms such as X-Plane, Microsoft Flight Simulator, or comparable aerospace simulation tools. Develop plugins, APIs, interfaces, and software bridges connecting simulation platforms with onboard and autonomy software. Implement realistic flight scenarios, sensor inputs, and environmental conditions for system testing and validation. Develop and support Software-in-the-Loop (SITL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing environments. Collaborate with GNC, embedded software, and autonomy engineers to integrate algorithms and validate system behavior. Improve simulation reliability, modularity, and automated testing capabilities. Contribute to software architecture decisions, code reviews, debugging, and engineering best practices.
Your Profile
Required Qualifications Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience. At least 3 years of professional software development experience. Hands-on experience developing software for flight simulation environments, including plugins, SDK integrations, or simulator interfaces.
Strong programming skills in C++ for performance-critical applications. Proficiency in Python for scripting, tooling, and test automation. Solid experience developing and debugging software in Linux environments. Experience designing modular, maintainable, and extensible software architectures. Strong analytical skills, independent problem-solving abilities, and a structured engineering approach. Professional English communication skills.
Nice to Have Experience with ROS / ROS 2. Familiarity with simulation frameworks such as Gazebo, JSBSim, FlightGear, or AirSim. Experience with SITL/HIL testing and autopilot frameworks such as PX4 or ArduPilot. Knowledge of MAVLink or comparable communication protocols. Experience simulating sensors, including cameras, IMUs, or radar. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated simulation testing. Basic understanding of flight dynamics, GNC, or autonomous control systems. Previous experience in aerospace, robotics, autonomous systems, or defence technology.
A background in GNC is not required. The primary focus of this position is software engineering and simulation architecture.
What We Offer The opportunity to shape the simulation architecture of sophisticated autonomous systems. Significant technical ownership and influence over engineering decisions. A modern, international engineering environment with short decision-making processes. Close collaboration with experienced specialists across software, robotics, and aerospace engineering. Exposure to complex, real-world engineering challenges. Competitive compensation and long-term development opportunities. Flexible working arrangements with a Munich-based engineering team. The opportunity to join a growing technology company at an exciting stage of development.
Additional Information Applicants must already hold a valid work permit for Germany, as visa sponsorship is currently unavailable. Depending on project requirements, eligibility for security-related background checks may be necessary.
