The posting

High Plainz Strains is hiring an Assistant Manager for our Ault, Colorado dispensary!

We're looking for a dependable, organized retail leader who can independently manage shifts, support employees, maintain accurate financial and inventory procedures, and keep daily operations running efficiently.

Our Ault location serves customers through both an in-store sales floor and a drive-through window. Managing these operations requires good judgment, clear communication, and the ability to balance customer service, employee responsibilities, and compliance.

This is a hands-on management position. You'll work alongside employees while taking responsibility for the successful execution of assigned shifts.

Cannabis experience is preferred, but experienced Shift Supervisors, Assistant Managers, Retail Team Leads, and other qualified retail leaders are encouraged to apply.

If you understand how to lead employees, maintain accurate procedures, and solve problems in a busy retail environment, we can teach you the cannabis-specific systems and regulations.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Shift Leadership and Employee Management

As Assistant Manager, you'll help the Store Manager maintain a capable, accountable team and consistent daily operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Independently supervising opening, daytime, and closing shifts.
  • Directing Budtenders, Lead Budtenders, and Front Desk employees.
  • Assigning responsibilities and ensuring work is completed.
  • Coordinating employee breaks, lunches, and shift coverage.
  • Adjusting employee assignments as customer traffic changes.
  • Supporting onboarding, training, and employee development.
  • Reinforcing performance expectations and correcting problems.
  • Addressing employee concerns and escalating serious issues appropriately.
  • Communicating shift results, staffing concerns, and operational problems to the Store Manager.

We want someone who leads by example, makes clear decisions, and holds employees accountable without creating unnecessary conflict.

A successful Assistant Manager should be capable of running an assigned shift without requiring constant direction from the Store Manager.

Customer Service and Drive-Through Operations

Our Ault location serves customers through two service channels, and the Assistant Manager helps ensure both operate efficiently.

You'll be expected to:

  • Maintain professional, knowledgeable customer service.
  • Monitor customer traffic and adjust employee assignments as needed.
  • Keep in-store and drive-through transactions moving efficiently.
  • Assist employees with complicated transactions or customer questions.
  • Resolve escalated customer complaints within your authority.
  • Ensure employees provide accurate product and promotional information.
  • Monitor execution of pricing, discounts, promotions, and loyalty programs.
  • Step in to assist customers during busy periods.

The goal is to provide efficient service without sacrificing accuracy or compliance.

We're looking for someone who can recognize developing problems, organize the team, and make practical adjustments before customer wait times or employee frustration become larger issues.

Cash Handling and Financial Controls

Assistant Managers play an important role in maintaining accurate financial procedures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Verifying opening and closing cash drawers.
  • Completing cash counts and reconciliation procedures.
  • Assisting with safe balances, cash transfers, and ATM reconciliation.
  • Reviewing and documenting discrepancies.
  • Monitoring refunds, discounts, and POS adjustments.
  • Assisting with employee tip counts and accurate tip documentation.
  • Maintaining required cash-handling records.
  • Reporting unusual transactions or financial concerns.
  • Following established security and loss-prevention procedures.

Accuracy, honesty, and attention to detail are essential.

We expect Assistant Managers to investigate discrepancies within their authority, document findings, and promptly communicate unresolved problems.

Inventory and Daily Store Operations

You'll help maintain an organized, properly stocked, and compliant retail environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting inventory counts, receiving, and stocking.
  • Monitoring product availability and merchandising standards.
  • Identifying and reporting inventory discrepancies.
  • Ensuring daily checklists and assigned operational tasks are completed.
  • Maintaining store cleanliness and organization.
  • Coordinating work during slower periods.
  • Communicating product and supply needs to management.
  • Supporting opening and closing procedures.
  • Identifying recurring problems and recommending improvements.

An effective Assistant Manager doesn't wait until the store is busy to recognize that something needs attention.

They help employees use their time productively and ensure the operation stays prepared for customers.

Compliance and Responsible Retail Operations

Cannabis is a highly regulated retail business.

Assistant Managers are responsible for helping ensure employees consistently follow Colorado cannabis regulations and company procedures.

This includes:

  • Ensuring proper identification verification.
  • Following applicable purchasing limits and transaction procedures.
  • Maintaining accurate inventory and sales records.
  • Supporting compliant product handling and storage.
  • Recognizing and addressing procedural concerns.
  • Reinforcing training and reporting potential violations promptly.

The Assistant Manager must be willing to enforce requirements consistently, even when doing so is inconvenient or unpopular.

What We're Looking For

Strong candidates should demonstrate:

  • Previous Assistant Manager, Shift Supervisor, Team Lead, Key Holder, or comparable retail leadership experience.
  • Ability to independently supervise employees during a shift.
  • Strong customer-service and communication skills.
  • Experience handling cash and reconciling transactions.
  • Familiarity with POS and inventory systems.
  • Ability to organize tasks and manage competing priorities.
  • Good judgment when handling customer and employee concerns.
  • Experience training or coaching coworkers.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
  • Comfort using common business technology, including Google Workspace.
  • Willingness to learn cannabis regulations and products.
  • Ability to maintain composure during busy periods.

Cannabis dispensary experience is preferred but not required.

Experience in convenience stores, grocery, restaurants, hospitality, specialty retail, or other fast-paced customer-facing businesses can translate particularly well to this position.

We're more interested in finding someone who can lead employees and manage responsibility than someone who simply knows cannabis products.

You also don't need to make cannabis your entire personality to work here. You need to be comfortable working in the industry, willing to learn the products and regulations, and capable of managing a professional, regulated retail operation.

Schedule

This is a full-time, on-site position, generally scheduled for 35–40 hours per week, depending on business needs.

Our Ault dispensary operates seven days a week, generally from 9:00 AM to 8:50 PM.

Applicants should have flexible availability for opening, daytime, and closing shifts, including weekends and holidays when required.

Occasional overtime may be necessary.

Compensation

$19.00 per hour + tips.

Tips vary based on customer traffic, staffing, and shifts worked and are not guaranteed.

Colorado Cannabis Requirements

Applicants must be at least 21 years old.

An active Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) Employee License is required before beginning regulated cannabis work.

Qualified applicants without a current MED license may still apply if they are eligible and willing to obtain one before starting regulated work.

Employees are responsible for obtaining, maintaining, and paying for their required MED license.

Benefits

Eligible full-time employees have access to:

  • Kaiser Permanente medical insurance
  • Delta Dental insurance
  • VSP vision coverage
  • Transamerica supplemental accident, illness, and gap coverage
  • Colorado SecureSavings retirement program
  • Paid sick leave
  • PTO/vacation beginning after six months, increasing with tenure up to four weeks annually after five years
  • Performance and wage reviews
  • Opportunities for advancement
  • Participation in our regular customer loyalty program, including 10% back in loyalty rewards on eligible purchases, subject to program terms and applicable law
