Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer – Defence Systems
Your role and impact
Own the development of end-to-end software applications used in complex operational environments, with a strong focus on stability, speed, and intuitive user workflows. Create robust real-time connectivity between command-and-control software, autonomous systems, sensors, and other mission-critical components. Engineer high-performance data flows that process and distribute information for tracking, sensor inputs, data fusion, and operational decision-making. Make complex systems transparent and diagnosable by implementing structured logging, metrics, tracing, and monitoring across the software stack. Build operator-facing applications for desktop and browser environments that turn large amounts of operational information into a clear and actionable picture. Work closely with adjacent engineering disciplines and contribute to technical architecture, system design, testing, and continuous product improvement.
What you bring
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or another relevant technical discipline. At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in systems where real-time behaviour, availability, scalability, or operational reliability are important. Strong frontend engineering skills with React or Angular and JavaScript/TypeScript, including experience building information-dense applications that remain fast and usable as data volumes increase. Backend development experience with Node.js and/or Python, including the design and implementation of APIs as well as persistent real-time connections such as WebSockets. Practical knowledge of different data-storage concepts, including relational databases, document databases, caching/in-memory systems, and time-series databases, for example PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, or InfluxDB. A strong foundation in computer networking, particularly TCP/IP and UDP, sockets, multicast communication, latency, packet loss, and distributed communication patterns. Experience with technologies such as Protocol Buffers, MQTT, or comparable messaging approaches is valuable; familiarity with MAVLink or similar telemetry protocols is an additional advantage. Confidence working in Linux environments and familiarity with production infrastructure and deployment tooling such as Docker, Nginx, and CI/CD workflows. Understanding of concepts relevant to real-time and autonomous systems, for example state machines, coordinate systems, sensor fusion, and Kalman filtering. A strong desire to take responsibility beyond the development environment and see software operating on real systems. Willingness to participate in field testing, investigate issues under real operating conditions, and translate findings directly into product improvements. Willingness to travel regularly to test locations within Germany and occasionally internationally.
The environment
Our client is a fast-growing European Defence-Tech company developing advanced software-intensive systems for autonomous and mission-critical applications.
You will work in an engineering environment with short decision paths, significant individual ownership, and close collaboration between software, systems, hardware, and operational teams.
The role offers the opportunity to: Work on software used in real operational environments Develop highly connected systems involving sensors, autonomous platforms, command-and-control applications, and other mission-critical components Contribute to scalable and resilient system architectures Stay close to the end user and participate in field testing Influence technical architecture, engineering practices, and product development Take significant ownership in a growing technology organization Work with an international engineering team focused on advanced European defence technologies
