The posting

Meta is seeking an Associate General Counsel, Trademarks to help protect, enforce, and strategically manage some of the world's most recognized brands, including Meta, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This is a senior individual contributor role responsible for executing complex trademark work across clearance, prosecution, enforcement, and portfolio strategy for Meta's family of companies and apps. This position reports to the Associate General Counsel, Head of Trademarks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead trademark clearance, prosecution, and portfolio strategy for designated trademark portfolios, including new product and feature names, logos, and acquired marks
  • Drive enforcement to protect Meta's trademarks from infringing third-party use and registration across global markets, collaborating with cross functional partners and brand protection vendors to address infringement, counterfeiting, and online abuse at scale
  • Provide trademark counsel to cross-functional partners in marketing, product, engineering, policy, and business teams on brand-related matters
  • Proactively identify, evaluate, and mitigate trademark and brand-related legal risks in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Manage and direct outside counsel on trademark prosecution, opposition, cancellation, and litigation matters across multiple jurisdictions, providing direction and quality control on legal strategy and holding firms accountable to service level expectations
  • Advise product counsel on trademark licensing matters, including co-branding, partner use of company marks, and licensing structures
  • Navigate novel legal issues at the intersection of trademarks, intellectual property, marketing, and technology
  • Develop and implement scalable processes, guidelines, and training for internal stakeholders on trademark clearance and brand usage, and contribute to the improvement of team tools and workflows
  • Shape trademark filing strategies and enforcement priorities aligned with Meta's global brand objectives

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution
  • Active and in good standing bar license in at least one U.S. state or equivalent foreign bar license. Where the jurisdiction of licensure differs from the location in which the role is based, the ability to promptly obtain permission to practice law for Meta in that location
  • 8+ years of legal experience as a practicing attorney, including at a law firm, in-house, or in government with significant depth in trademark law
  • Experience managing global trademark portfolios, including prosecution, clearance, enforcement, and inter partes proceedings before the USPTO and international trademark offices
  • Experience managing outside counsel on trademark matters
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage a complex workload and drive projects to completion in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience handling complex trademark matters in-house at a global technology company, or equivalent experience at a top-tier IP practice serving major brand owners
  • Experience with trademark strategy in emerging technology areas (AI, XR, hardware)
  • Experience managing trademark litigation matters, including working with outside counsel on enforcement and defense
  • Familiarity with domain name matters and related brand protection mechanisms
  • Experience operating at the intersection of trademark, advertising/marketing law, and product counseling
  • Experience with brand protection at scale, including online enforcement and anti-counterfeiting
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies

US: $202,000/year to $274,000/year + bonus + equity
