The posting

Meta is seeking a Research Scientist to advance the frontiers of artificial intelligence across foundational and applied research domains. In this role, you will conduct original AI research with the potential to shape the next generation of intelligent systems, spanning areas such as large language models, multimodal learning, reasoning, generalization, and AI alignment. You will work within a collaborative research environment, translating scientific breakthroughs into real-world impact across Meta's AI-powered products and platforms, while contributing to the broader scientific community through publications and open research.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute original research programs in artificial intelligence, including large-scale language modeling, multimodal learning, reasoning, or related foundational AI areas
  • Develop and evaluate novel algorithms, architectures, and training methodologies that advance the state of the art in AI research
  • Implement the most technically challenging components of research systems, ensuring rigor in experimental design, evaluation, and reproducibility
  • Define research metrics and evaluation frameworks to measure progress against long-term scientific and product objectives
  • Lead the technical design of research initiatives, including scoping, milestone planning, and cross-functional coordination with engineering and product teams
  • Translate research findings into scalable systems and production-ready solutions in collaboration with applied engineering teams
  • Mentor other researchers and engineers on the team, providing technical guidance and supporting their growth in AI research methodology
  • Communicate research outcomes through internal technical reports, external publications, and presentations at leading AI conferences and workshops
  • Identify and drive improvements to research infrastructure, tooling, and experimentation workflows to accelerate team-wide research velocity
  • Contribute to recruiting efforts by evaluating candidates and articulating the team's research vision and strategic priorities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of experience conducting research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or a closely related field, including industry or academic research settings
  • Experience leading at least one major AI research initiative from conception through publication or production deployment
  • Experience developing and implementing novel machine learning methods, including deep learning architectures, training at scale, or evaluation methodology
  • Demonstrated track record of publishing research at peer-reviewed AI venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, CVPR, or equivalent
  • Experience communicating complex research findings in writing and presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with large-scale distributed training of foundation models, including pretraining, fine-tuning, or reinforcement learning from human feedback
  • Contributions to open-source AI research frameworks or widely cited work in areas such as multimodal learning, reasoning, generalization, or AI safety
  • Experience bridging foundational AI research and applied product impact, including collaborating with engineering teams on production systems
  • PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent research experience

US: $184,000/year to $257,000/year + bonus + equity
