This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Compliance based in the United States.

This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for shaping HR compliance strategy across the United States and Canada. You will help strengthen governance, manage employment-related risk, and turn complex regulations into practical business solutions. The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on involvement in investigations, policies, labor relations, and compliance programs. You will work closely with senior leaders and cross-functional teams including HR, Legal, Finance, Technology, and Employee Relations. A key focus will be leading Canadian labor relations, including collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance resolution. This is an opportunity to modernize compliance practices, influence enterprise-wide decisions, and build scalable programs in a complex, evolving environment. The position is remote and offers meaningful scope to shape the future of compliance across two countries.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive HR compliance framework covering U.S. and Canadian operations, ensuring alignment with evolving federal, state, provincial, and local requirements.
  • Monitor regulatory and legislative developments and translate changes into practical policies, procedures, controls, and business practices.
  • Lead compliance audits, risk assessments, investigations, and corrective action plans covering areas such as wage and hour, equal employment opportunity, accommodations, leave, workplace safety, pay transparency, and employment standards.
  • Identify emerging compliance risks and partner with business and functional leaders to develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee compliance programs relating to immigration, work authorization, visa sponsorship, and cross-border employee mobility.
  • Develop, review, and implement HR policies, procedures, and employee handbooks while establishing strong governance and documentation practices.
  • Provide expert guidance to HR and business leaders on employment practices, policy interpretation, and complex compliance matters.
  • Lead Canadian labor relations, including collective bargaining, contract administration, grievance resolution, and relationships with union representatives.
  • Monitor Canadian labor legislation and assess its impact on employees, policies, and business operations.
  • Partner with HR, Legal, Finance, Commercial, Technology, and other functions to identify risks and align compliance practices with business objectives.
  • Advise on complex investigations involving compliance concerns, employee relations, workplace conflicts, and disciplinary matters.
  • Influence senior leaders on employment, compliance, governance, and risk-related decisions.
  • Coach and mentor HR, Employee Relations, and compliance professionals while contributing to a high-performing and inclusive culture.
  • Drive continuous improvement and digital transformation by leveraging technology, systems, and data to improve compliance processes and decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate compliance records and deliver meaningful reporting and insights to senior leadership and relevant regulatory stakeholders.
  • Support and deliver training on applicable compliance topics, including privacy, anti-bribery, anti-corruption, antitrust, and conflicts of interest.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Law, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in HR compliance, employee relations, employment law, or a related field, including at least 6 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. and Canadian employment and labor laws, employment standards, and HR compliance practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess organizational risk and translate complex legal or regulatory requirements into practical, actionable business solutions.
  • Experience leading complex investigations, compliance programs, or cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with discretion, integrity, and professionalism.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, project management, and stakeholder-management capabilities.
  • Proven ability to influence senior leaders and build trusted partnerships across HR, Legal, and broader business functions.
  • Strategic mindset combined with the ability to engage directly with complex operational and compliance matters.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, balance organizational consistency with local requirements, and make sound decisions in complex situations.
  • Collaborative, curious, ethical, and continuous-improvement-oriented approach.
  • Preferred: MBA, advanced degree, or relevant professional certification such as SHRM-SCP, SPHR, CCEP, CHRL, or CHRP.
  • Preferred: Experience within a mid-to-large organization, ideally supporting 5,000+ employees.
  • Preferred: Experience in telecommunications, infrastructure, technology, professional services, or another complex or regulated environment.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting unionized workforces, including collective bargaining, contract administration, and labor relations.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting employees and operations across both the United States and Canada.
  • Preferred: Bilingual proficiency in French and English.
  • Estimated base salary range of $107,300–$165,000 USD annually, with actual compensation varying based on location, experience, skills, certifications, and organizational considerations.
  • Eligibility for a discretionary annual incentive plan for non-sales roles.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan.
  • Paid time off and generous leave programs, including paid parental leave.
  • Remote work opportunity within the United States.
  • Opportunity to work in a highly visible strategic leadership role with cross-border scope.
  • Meaningful opportunity to influence compliance strategy, governance, risk management, and organizational transformation.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
