Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka

About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced and commercially minded Lead Mechanical Engineer o lead a specialized engineering division focused on diesel engine systems, power generation solutions, hydraulic equipment, and heavy industrial applications.

This is a leadership role that combines technical expertise, business development, customer engagement, and operational management. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving business growth, managing principal relationships, overseeing technical operations, and delivering engineering solutions for major customers across multiple sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Business & Commercial Leadership

  • Lead the Power Systems business unit and take ownership of revenue, profitability, growth targets, and customer relationships.
  • Develop and execute commercial strategies to expand market share and strengthen customer partnerships.
  • Manage relationships with major industrial, government, infrastructure, marine, and utility sector customers.
  • Support tendering, contract negotiations, and strategic business development initiatives.

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical expertise relating to diesel engines, power generation systems, hydraulics, and heavy equipment applications.
  • Support customers with engine overhauls, fault diagnosis, fuel systems, spare parts identification, and maintenance solutions.
  • Review technical requirements and recommend optimal engineering solutions.
  • Work closely with workshop teams and engineers to ensure service standards are maintained.

Project & Contract Management

  • Develop service, maintenance, and annual support contracts for industrial and infrastructure customers.
  • Coordinate technical projects and equipment support requirements.
  • Ensure timely execution of customer commitments and technical service delivery.
  • Monitor contract performance and customer satisfaction levels.

Principal & Supplier Management

  • Work directly with international principals on pricing, inventory planning, product support, and technical escalations.
  • Manage technical communication with manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Support product introduction, technical training, and market expansion activities.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineering and technical teams.
  • Drive a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and customer-focused service delivery.
  • Support succession planning and capability development initiatives.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Marine Engineers holding MEO Class III, IV, or equivalent qualifications with relevant commercial experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum 5 years of sea-going or shore-based engineering experience involving diesel engines and power systems.

OR

  • Minimum 5–10 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, power generation, hydraulics, heavy equipment, or industrial machinery.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong hands-on experience with: Diesel Engines Power Generation Systems Fuel Injection Systems Hydraulics Heavy Equipment Industrial Machinery
  • Proven experience in engine overhauls and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Strong ability to identify spare parts through technical catalogues and engine serial information.
  • Good understanding of preventative maintenance and equipment reliability.

Leadership & Commercial Skills

  • Strong commercial awareness and business development capability.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to engage confidently with senior government, industrial, and corporate stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Passion for building and growing a business rather than simply maintaining existing operations.
